Community involvement has been a vital part of success for Western & Southern Financial
Group, which has a heritage dating back to 1888.
Generous associate and corporate monetary donations have made Western & Southern
Financial Group a regular member of Greater Cincinnati’s top 10 United Way Campaigns.
In addition, outstanding volunteer leadership from Western & Southern associates has
contributed significantly to United Way.
The depth of commitment demonstrated by the company and its leaders was expressed in 2003,
when United Way awarded retired Chairman, William J. Williams, the Alexis de Tocqueville
Award for serving as a "... quiet but dynamic force for good in Greater Cincinnati for
over three generations."
That same year, another Western & Southern executive and community leader, Herb Brown,
was recognized when the United Way African-American leadership society was named The
Herbert R. Brown Society. This initiative, founded under his leadership in 2001, seeks to
increase African-American participation in the United Way process.
In addition to involvement with United Way, Western & Southern Financial Group and
the Western & Southern Financial Fund address our region’s human needs – especially
those in the areas of health and education – through major community fund-raising
campaigns and support for nonprofit institutions. Some of the organizations that have
benefited from Western & Southern’s generosity include the Greater Cincinnati Chapter
of the National MS Society, the Fine Arts Fund, the Williams College of Business at Xavier
University, and cutting-edge medical programs at several local hospitals.
Since 2002, Western & Southern has proudly served as title sponsor of the Western &
Southern Financial Group Masters, one of the 13 most prestigious tennis tournaments in the
world. This is a significant event that makes a big impact on the community and benefits
Children's Hospital Medical Center and Tennis for City Youth. Since 2004, Western &
Southern has expanded its sponsorship to include the Western & Southern Financial Group
Women's Open, a tier-three Women's Tennis Association (WTA) event, which is bringing ever
more exciting women’s tennis to Cincinnati each year. The Western & Southern Financial
Group Women’s Open benefits the Charles M. Barrett Cancer Center. In addition to the
charitable contributions they raise, the two tournaments generate more than $25 million
in annual economic impact to the Greater Cincinnati region each year.
The 2008 Western & Southern Financial Group Masters will be held July 26-Aug. 3, while
the Western & Southern Financial Group Women’s Open will take place Aug. 9-17.
These activities are just a few visible signs of Western & Southern Financial Group's
commitment to the city of Cincinnati and the people who make it thrive.
