Western & Southern Financial Group Announces Award Finalists

Eleven CPS educators have been selected as contenders for the 2009 Dr. Lawrence C. Hawkins Educator of the Year Award.

CINCINNATI — April 15, 2009 — Western & Southern Financial Group (Western & Southern) today announced finalists for its 2009 Dr. Lawrence C. Hawkins Educator of the Year Award.

Western & Southern established the Dr. Lawrence C. Hawkins Educator of the Year Award in 2007 to inspire and reward excellence in Cincinnati Public Schools (CPS) educators. Finalists for the 2009 award were chosen from a group of 23 teachers and administrators who were nominated by their peers.

This distinguished award honors one educator a year who has elevated the educational process in Cincinnati’s public schools to an exceptional level through personal commitment, dedicated focus and outstanding results. The 2009 award recipient will be announced at a luncheon ceremony at The Guilford Institute downtown on May 5, and they will receive a personal check for $10,000 from Western & Southern.

Barrett, chairman, president and chief executive officer for Western & Southern. "The Dr. Lawrence C. Hawkins Educator of the Year Award seeks to recognize and reward individuals who are driven by their passion and commitment for excellence in education."

The award’s namesake, Dr. Lawrence C. Hawkins, served as a member of the board of directors for Western & Southern and was a renowned educator in Cincinnati. He earned undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Cincinnati, as well as a doctorate in education. Dr. Hawkins worked as both an educator and administrator in CPS before joining the UC faculty where he founded the College of Community Affairs. He was promoted to vice president of continuing education and metropolitan affairs and then again to executive vice president of administration. Dr. Hawkins served on several local community and business boards and was named a Great Living Cincinnatian in 1989 by The Greater Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce.

Past recipients of the award include Kimya Moyo from Aiken College & Career High School in 2008 and Sharon Johnson from Withrow University High School in 2007.
