Queen City Square Progress Update

Structural Steel Now Being Installed at Great American Tower at Queen City Square

May 15, 2009 — The structural steel that forms the "skeleton" of the Great American Tower at Queen City Square – Cincinnati’s newest and tallest skyscraper – recently began being installed.

The installation of the structural steel follows the "underground" work that has happened for several months. That work included the foundation and underground portions of the garage, as well as much of the electrical and plumbing infrastructure for the project.

The concrete core of the tower already rises several floors above ground level and will continue to be built a few floors ahead of the structural steel construction. The core will house the tower’s 25 elevators plus stairwells and various mechanical areas.

Eagle Realty Group expects the erection of the structural steel to progress at an average rate of one floor every eight to nine days. It estimates that structural steel construction should be finished by spring 2010, after which the construction of the tiara will commence.

Key facts about materials used in the construction of the Great American Tower at Queen City Square:

  • 5,700 tons of structural steel (skeleton of building)
  • 400 tons of steel for the tiara
  • 5,000 tons of reinforcing steel (steel used to reinforce concrete)
  • 62,000 cubic yards of concrete
  • 880 drilled auger-cast piles (to support the building)
  • BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The architecturally distinctive building will be known as the "Great American Tower at Queen City Square," after its lead tenant. The Queen City Square Tower project is an office, parking and retail development that is being built along Sycamore Street between Third and Fourth streets. The project will have three major components: a 1,700-car parking garage on 11 levels; an 800,000 sq. ft., 33-level office tower above a portion of the garage; and a pedestrian promenade extending from the office lobby north to the main Rotunda entry at the corner of Fourth and Sycamore. In addition, retail spaces will exist in various locations on the street levels of the project.

Queen City Square is a development of Eagle Realty Group (a member of Western & Southern Financial Group) and is co-sponsored by its funding partners, the Port of Greater Cincinnati Development Authority and the City of Cincinnati.
