Queen City Square Progress Update
Final Crane Jump Scheduled for March 27 and 28

Main crane to reach total height of 746 feet

The final crane jump for the main crane at the construction site of Great American Tower at Queen City Square is scheduled for the weekend of March 27 and 28, 2010. A crane jump is when the construction crane adds a new section (or sections) onto its base, making it taller and keeping it higher than the building structure itself.

This will make the crane high enough to begin installation of the tower’s distinctive tiara. Once completed later this summer, the tiara will bring the total height of the tower structure to 665 feet, making it the tallest skyscraper in Cincinnati. At about the same time, the exterior of the tower should be completed as well.

As previously announced, the base building is expected to be completed substantially in January 2011, at which time the anchor tenant – American Financial Group – will begin moving into its space. Later in the year, Frost Brown Todd will begin its move-in.

Key facts about materials used in the construction of Great American Tower at Queen City Square:

  • 5,800 tons of structural steel (skeleton of building)
  • 685 tons of concrete and reinforced steel for the base of the tiara
  • 300 tons of steel for the tiara
  • 5,000 tons of reinforcing steel (steel used to reinforce concrete)
  • 63,000 cubic yards of concrete
  • 273 miles of electrical wire
Background Information
Queen City Square – comprised of the existing 303 Broadway and Great American Tower – is a development of Eagle Realty Group, a member of Western & Southern Financial Group (Western & Southern) and is co-sponsored by Eagle Realty Group’s funding partners, the Port of Greater Cincinnati Development Authority and the City of Cincinnati. Construction is the responsibility of Turner Construction. Great American Tower at Queen City Square is the second phase of an office, parking and retail complex located on Sycamore Street between Third and Fourth streets. It has three major components: a 1,600-car parking garage on 11 levels; an 800,000 sq. ft., 33-level office tower above a portion of the garage; and a public pedestrian/walking area with retail space. The tower is adjacent and will be connected to 303 Broadway – an office building and the first phase of Queen City Square developed by Eagle Realty Group in 2006 – that houses some Western & Southern businesses. 303 Broadway has about 188,500 sq. ft. of office space and a 650-car parking garage. In its entirety, the Queen City Square complex has more than 1 million square feet of office and retail space and more than 2,200 parking spaces, and it required a total investment of about $400 million from Western & Southern.
