Queen City Square Progress Update
Preparation for Installation of Tiara Has Begun
Concrete bases have been poured and first tiara pieces have arrivedPreparation for the installation of the tiara at the top of Great American Tower at Queen City Square is now underway. The two concrete bases atop the steel structure where the ends of the tiara will be secured have been poured. Following this, a temporary platform will be created to support equipment and the tiara sections during the installation process.
The tiara is a self-supporting arched structure that is made up of a series of nine interconnected arches, which form the larger arched tiara shape. Each side has four smaller interconnected arched elements that are joined at the top of the tiara with the upper main arched element.
The tiara pieces, which are being fabricated in Louisiana, will be transported by truck to the project over the next few months. The initial pieces have arrived and are being assembled on top of the parking garage. These assembled pieces will form the first segments of the lower arches, which will be lifted to the top of the tower by the end of April. There are 44 segments that will create the entire tiara.
Once completed later this summer, the tiara will bring the total height of the tower structure to 665 feet, making it the tallest skyscraper in Cincinnati. At about the same time, the exterior of the tower also should be completed.
Key facts about the tiara:
- Total weight of the tiara: 300 tons of steel
- Total weight of the two concrete bases (concrete and reinforced steel): 685 tons
- Total height of the tiara: 130 feet
- Total length of the tiara base: 150 feet
- Total width of the tiara at the widest point: 90 feet
Background Information
Queen City Square – comprised of the existing 303 Broadway and Great American Tower in downtown Cincinnati – is a development of Eagle Realty Group, a member of Western & Southern Financial Group (Western & Southern) and is co-sponsored by Eagle Realty Group’s funding partners, the Port of Greater Cincinnati Development Authority and the City of Cincinnati. Construction is the responsibility of Turner Construction. Great American Tower at Queen City Square, the second phase of the development, is located on Sycamore Street between Third and Fourth streets. It has three major components: a 1,600-car parking garage on 11 levels; an 800,000 sq. ft., 33-level office tower above a portion of the garage; and a public pedestrian/walking area with retail space. The tower is adjacent and will be connected to 303 Broadway – an office building and the first phase of Queen City Square developed by Eagle Realty Group in 2006 – that houses some Western & Southern businesses. 303 Broadway has about 188,500 sq. ft. of office space and a 650-car parking garage. In its entirety, the Queen City Square complex has more than 1 million square feet of office and retail space and more than 2,200 parking spaces, and it required a total investment of about $400 million from Western & Southern.
