Western & Southern Life Delivers Water to West Virginia Flood Victims

The flood that hit hundreds of communities in West Virginia in June resulted in 23 deaths and enough damage to be declared a federal disaster area by President Barack Obama. In response, The Western and Southern Life Insurance Company (Western & Southern Life) mobilized to help.

Even though Cincinnati is 200 miles from Elkview, our associates felt compelled to help, and we're proud to work for a company like Western & Southern Life that supports our efforts.

In addition to the West Virginia-based Western & Southern Life associates devoting time to preparing, serving, and distributing food, water, and other provisions to local residents, Cincinnati-based associates also joined the effort. In three days, associates in Cincinnati raised $1,400 to purchase bottles of water and cleaning supplies.

On July 8, a 26-foot truck arrived at Western & Southern Life's Elkview, West Virginia, office with more than 250 cases of water. The truck was driven from Cincinnati by Joe Lynch, vice president of the company's customer relationship center and Jim Remke, underwriter.

"The devastation in West Virginia is every bit as bad as what I witnessed in Alabama after Hurricane Katrina," said Lynch. "It was very humbling to see the number of Elkview families displaced from their homes because of water damage, including the families of our own associates."

A town of less than 1,300 residents, Elkview was one of the areas hit hard by the flooding. During the heavy rains, a bridge to a shopping center was washed out, leaving 500 people stranded for 24 hours. That bridge is still out, and those businesses, including a Kroger, remain closed. Only one small grocery store is currently open in Elkview.

Through social media and word-of-mouth, local residents affected by the flooding were encouraged to visit the Elkview office to receive the water and cleaning supplies. Those in need who couldn't make it to the office due to lost vehicles or impassable roads received in-home deliveries by Western & Southern Life staff.

"Even though Cincinnati is 200 miles from Elkview, our associates felt compelled to help, and we're proud to work for a company like Western & Southern Life that supports our efforts," said Lynch.
